Wild Yam (Dioscorea villosa)
Wild yam is a plant indigenous to the eastern and central regions of the United States. An important constituent of the yam root is the steroid saponin diosgenin, a molecule that is an incubator for the formation of the hormone progesterone.
The lipid balance of the skin is regulated at a hormonal level. As hormone activity decreases, lipid-cell proliferation of the skin decreases. In skin care products, wild yam is used to improve the skin lipid content in mature skin.
