From Ombrelle to Reversa®
The resounding success of Dermtek Pharmaceuticals Ltd.
In 1986, after many years in the field of pharmaceuticals, Robert Lavoie and Nicole Lavoie founded a uniquely Canadian company specialized in the development of the highest quality products for dermatologists.
Since its inception, Dermtek Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (Dermtek) has focused on research and development, and bringing to market innovative dermatological products on the cutting edge of technology. Brands marketed by the company include SOLUVER (for the treatment of warts), SEBCUR (medicated shampoo), and ACNEX (medicated acne cleanser)
After consulting with dermatologists, Robert and Nicole Lavoie realized there was a need for a wide-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen. Knowing the needs and expectations of the market, they were also aware that consumers wanted an effective sunscreen that was non-irritating, waterproof, non-comedogenic, moisturizing and non-greasy. In 1990, Dermtek launched the revolutionary sunscreen Ombrelle, a brand that has enjoyed resounding success ever since. In a very short time, Ombrelle became THE sunscreen in Canada. The product is recommended by the Canadian Dermatology Association.
In October 1997, the brand was acquired by L’Oréal, after becoming the top-selling protective sunscreen in pharmacies across Canada.
The Reversa® Line
In 1994, the experience acquired with Ombrelle in sun protection led to the development of a product for skin correction. The REVERSA Line was born, a new generation of cosmeceutical products1 containing glycolic acid2, developed and manufactured following strict pharmaceutical guidelines.
In 2000, the company launched the first line of cosmeceutical products containing glycolic acid and featuring a new, patented technology in COSMEDERM 7™ and PARSOL 1789: a reliable brand with a promising future.
Designed to treat sun damage to skin and the ensuing aging effects, REVERSA cosmeceutical products are non-irritating and have a dual moisturizing and exfoliating action. DERMTEK: leading the way in anti-aging skincare!
When it comes to anti-aging, the researchers at Dermtek Phamaceuticals are in a class apart: in the fight against wrinkles, glycolic acid (AHA) is now a proven ally. The widely acclaimed formula has not been changed. However, the brand has now added the Time Release Glyco-Comfort System™, making these products better tolerated by individuals with highly sensitive skin.
All REVERSA formulas containing glycolic acid are made with the Time-Release Glyco-Comfort System™ which allowed even the most sensitive skin to benefit from the efficacy of AHAs. Combining glycolic acid with an amino acid, Arginine3, and the skin protectant Allantoin4, this system makes glycolic acid comfortable to apply. These benefits are obtained by controlling the release and penetration of free acid molecules into the skin. Sheer bliss for sensitive skin!
The wonderful properties of glycolic acid (exfoliation, moisturization, increase of skin thickness, reduction of the appearance of wrinkles, age spots and other signs of aging) are now available for all skin types. The main ingredients used in the formulas are the anti-wrinkle peptide Micro-Collagen™ (also known as Matrixyl™), carefully selected plant extracts like Rumex5, and various UVA/UVB sun filters, including Parsol 17896.

- A cosmeceutical product is a highly effective, leading-edge cosmetic containing bioactive ingredients, based on a more medicinal approach than ordinary skincare cosmetics.
- Glycolic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from sugar cane. It is a bioactive substance that produces specific and unique results on skin structure. Since the molecular weight of this acid is less than that of other AHAs, it penetrates deep into the skin.
- Arginine is an amino acid and natural moisturizing factor that has a positive effect on skin physiology, modifying the perception of irritation-triggering stimuli.
- Allantoin is a skin protectant of natural origin whose beneficial properties have long been recognized: it stimulates cell regeneration and softens the skin, while protecting it from irritant reactions.
- Rumex extract derives from plants native to the Canadian Prairies. Rumex extract has the capacity to inhibit the production of tyrosinase enzyme, a substance in human skin that is responsible for reddish-brown pigmentation.
- PARSOL 1789 is a highly effective UVA filter. It was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1997.
